Wisconsin Veterinary Technician Association
July 20, 2009
Dear WVTA members -
It is with great regret that I must notify you of the credential renewal fee that was recently approved by the Department of Regulation and Licensing (DRL). When first announced, Kim Brown and Kelly McDowell (from the WVMA) as well as WVTA representatives, were quick to act. Multiple meetings with multiple departments at DRL proved fruitless. Questions regarding the method of calculating the then proposed increase went largely unanswered. Although basic information was provided, when the specific questions came about how the numbers could be so high, there was no reasonable explanation given. The new renewal fee will be $160.00 for two years – the same as the DVMs will be paying.
I realize that this significant increase will make some people question the necessity of the credential. I implore you to think about the profession, your career and your patients before making any hasty decisions. If you choose not to renew your credential, that certainly is your right, HOWEVER, it also means that you cannot call your self a veterinary technician anymore, nor will you be able to continue to perform the duties you are currently performing.
There will be an article in the next WVTA Journal, due to hit your computer screens and mailboxes in mid-August making this same announcement. If you wish to comment about this increase, PLEASE contact the Secretary of DRL directly! It will be more effective to register your concerns with the agency that is establishing the increase. Writing to the WVTA or the WVMA is always an option, but we have no control over this decision. The number to call is 608-266-2112 or outside Madison 1-877-617-1565. The Secretary is Celia M Jackson.
I know this is a tremendous insult to many people, but please don’t give up! Our profession and your patients NEED YOU!!!
Thank you!
Teri Raffel, CVT
Interim WVTA President
